Amsterdam UMC Impact Model: a guide for researchers

November 6, 2024

Researchers aiming to make impact often start by asking foundational questions: What, With whom, For whom, When, and How to begin. To support this journey, Amsterdam UMC has created an Impact Model that guides researchers through the stages needed for a successful impact initiative, covering key considerations and processes.

Towards successful Impact

Effective impact initiatives are born from researchers’ creativity, curiosity, and intrinsic motivation. The Amsterdam UMC Impact Model outlines the impact process in six steps, starting from an initial “Starting Point” that includes components relevant to each stage. The model’s iterative and flexible design allows researchers to revisit or overlap steps as needed, highlighting that there is no single “right” way to progress. However, each step is essential for achieving meaningful impact.

Alongside the six steps and Starting Point, the model includes supplementary checks and tools to support researchers throughout the impact process. While impact often starts with simply “just start and do it,” it is crucial to have the right support structures and tools in place. The model serves both as a source of inspiration and a practical resource for developing and refining impact initiatives at Amsterdam UMC.

A validated model

The model has been rigorously tested within Amsterdam UMC by experienced researchers who found it highly valuable. It incorporates best practices from models used by grant providers and policymakers, both nationally and internationally, and includes “Checks & Tools” that reference these foundational models.

Impact Model as part of Amsterdam UMC’s Valorization Compass

The Impact model was created as part of the Valorization Compass made by the Amsterdam Valorization Board and Innovation Exchange Amsterdam (IXA). According to vice dean of valorization Arjen Brussaard, it’s a powerful tool that helps researchers turn their knowledge into societal innovations faster: “It enables us to collaborate quicker and purposefully with external partners, thus increasing the impact of our research.” The Valorization Compass is a supporting document; you don’t need to read it in full or from cover to cover, but can use it well as a reference or handbook. For the full press release about the new Compass, read more here.

Support and contact

For further support or assistance with the impact process, researchers can contact their institute’s Business Developer or Impact Developer or reach out to IXA, the valorization and impact department of Amsterdam UMC at info@ixa.nl
