The second selection round of the Academic Startup Competition is just around the corner! On December 14th, forty-five pre-selected academic start-ups will present themselves to an expert jury of (international) investors and companies. The line-up of competing startups are from all Dutch universities, and no less than ten of them are affiliated with the Amsterdam knowledge institutes. Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, having entrepreneurship as a spearhead, is hosting the selection round which is being opened by Margrethe Jonkman, chairman of the VU Executive Board.
The ten Amsterdam startups are in the race to get a chance to participate in workshops, promotional programmes and peer-to-peer learning to help founders accelerate the growth and scalability of their companies. Upon selection for the final, they will be diving deeper into the innovation ecosystem and get the opportunity to develop a network of peers, experts and mentors. First, they present themselves in the second selection round of the competition.
Pre-selected VU startups
The VU startups presenting themselves are: Incircular B.V., Madglove Amsterdam, MycoFarming, De Spiegelonderzoek and Veridis Technologies. Two alumni that previously made it to the top ten most innovative startups in the Academic Startup Competition are Findest in 2019 and Digi.Bio in 2020.
Pre-selected UvA startups
The UvA startups presenting themselves are: PsyPhy BV, Eddytec, Anywyse and SolarFoil BV. Previous alumni include: Kepler Vision Technologies in 2019 and Ellogon AI in 2022.
Pre-selected Amsterdam UMC startup
Last but not least, the Amsterdam UMC supports startup Ayuvant, jointly with the University of Utrecht.

Ten years ago, a groundbreaking medical innovation made it possible to remove a blood clot from stroke patients using a catheter procedure. The health benefits for patients after this procedure are often much greater than with other treatments. Thanks to the collaboration with Amsterdam UMC, this treatment is now also being performed at the Noordwest Ziekenhuisgroep in Alkmaar.
