On 5 September REC Impact opened with a full house of researchers, entrepreneurs, impact drivers, and innovators. REC Impact – located in the former physics lab on Roeterseilandcampus of the University of Amsterdam (UvA) – is where innovation meets action. It will serve as a hub for visionary thinkers and social entrepreneurs working to solve societal challenges.
During the opening, speakers highlighted the importance of innovation and collaboration. Jan Lintsen (Vice-President of the Executive Board – UvA) emphasized the university’s role in advancing research and impact, while Arjen van Nieuwenhuizen (Industry Principal Investigator at AMS – the Advanced Metropolitan Solutions Institute in Amsterdam) spoke about Amsterdam’s nine innovation districts, with REC Impact at the heart of these efforts.
The event also featured a panel of impact leaders highlighting ongoing initiatives, the announcement of the upcoming Digital Transformation Lab, and the signing of the Urban Impact Lab, a project focused on solving Amsterdam’s challenges through data science.
REC Impact partners with IXA-UvA to speed up collaborations between SSH researchers, companies and non-profit organizations. And IXA-UvA is also partner to researchers who are investigating options to transform their research into impactful social ventures and applications. That is why IXA’s team now has an office at REC Impact: easy for researchers to drop by!
Roeterseilandcampus (campus of UvA) is home to the largest cluster of social sciences in the Netherlands. With faculties of Economics and Business, Social and Behavioural Sciences, and Law, along with the student cultural organization CREA and UvA Ventures Holding, the campus thrives on collaboration and knowledge-sharing. REC Impact embodies this mission by driving initiatives, connecting communities, and forging long-term partnerships.
Water, comprising over 70% of our planet, is the source of all life. The presence of emerging contaminants in our water, including pharmaceuticals, pose serious health and environmental risks, such as DNA damage, reproductive issues, and cancer. New equipment to detect these contaminants developed by VU researchers has been sold to other research groups all over the world. Now the researchers are taking the next step, together with IXA, to expand sales to water companies worldwide as well as other applications such as food and drug discovery research.
