The Executive Board of Amsterdam UMC has expressed a strong interest in expanding the institution’s expertise at the critical intersection of nutrition, health, and disease. This initiative aims to enhance our impact on social well-being and healthcare by fostering collaboration among various (pre)clinical research groups at Amsterdam UMC. Driven by this vision, the Amsterdam Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, and Metabolism (AGEM) research institute, in collaboration with IXA, has begun exploring relevant projects within this theme. The goal is to leverage the complementary expertise of AGEM Principal Investigators and researchers from other Amsterdam UMC institutes to facilitate public-private partnerships.
To bring this vision to life, the Amsterdam Gastroenterology, Endocrinology, and Metabolism Institute (AGEM), in close collaboration with IXA (Innovation Exchange Amsterdam), will lead the effort by establishing projects in the areas of a) early life nutrition, b) nutrition and mitigation/prevention of chronic inflammatory) diseases, and c) perioperative nutrition/food for care. The envisioned partnerships between academic (e.g. Wageningen University & Research) and industrial partners will thus benefit from complementary expertise from the various investigators. Thus, creating a multidisciplinary approach that will enable us to address some of the most pressing health challenges.
The goal is to advance research and innovation in areas where nutrition and specific bioactive ingredients play a pivotal role in preventing or managing diseases, driving improvement in patient outcomes, and promoting healthier communities. Spanning from fundamental research in cells and organotypic models, to predictive biomarker and target identification in cohort studies, and specific interventions in defined patient groups. By collaborating with external partners, Amsterdam UMC aims to translate its research into real-world applications that will benefit the health sector and society.
Stemming from this “Food for Life” initiative, a symposium will be organized on 10 October from 13.30-17.30 in De Nieuwe KHL in Amsterdam. With participants from various Dutch research centers, and with lectures on Early Life Nutrition, Nutrition and Chronic Diseases, and Optimized Perioperative Nutrition.
The Academic Workplace Rudolf Berlin Center (AW RBC) aims to make a meaningful contribution by supporting young people with learning disabilities through enhanced education and care.

NewsWater, comprising over 70% of our planet, is the source of all life. The presence of emerging contaminants in our water, including pharmaceuticals, pose serious health and environmental risks, such as DNA damage, reproductive issues, and cancer. New equipment to detect these contaminants developed by VU researchers has been sold to other research groups all over the world. Now the researchers are taking the next step, together with IXA, to expand sales to water companies worldwide as well as other applications such as food and drug discovery research.
